Until recently we didn't think much about location of Zabbix server so when client asked we just advised to put it on dedicated hardware in their server room. At that time there were no server available so we configured "technology preview" on old workstation computer standing on developer's desk. We only added extra HDD to RAID-1 for redundancy.
Zabbix was working perfectly in such configuration so everyone forgotten about it until months later most of the servers in the server room were shut down following failure of an air conditioning system. Only then it became apparent how beneficial it was to keep Zabbix away from monitored resources.
During the failure Zabbix was among few still operaitional systems precisely because it was out of server room so it was not affected by emergency shutdown.
Perhaps that incident teaches the lesson about importance of choosing the location for Zabbix server so it would remain functional when it is needed the most.
